On Friday November 30th, 2012, join Tantra Fitness as they celebrate launching their 2013-2014 Women of Tantra Fitness Calendar! Proceeds from the calendar sales go to SlutWalk Vancouver. Get ready for some amazing pole performances, music, drinks, a chance to make new friends, and (best of all) your opportunity to support both Tantra Fitness and SlutWalk Vancouver. The Calendar Girls will be at the event to sign your calendar!

The event will be held from 7:30pm to 10:00pm at Tantra Fitness. The cost of entry is $5 (+ HST) for unlimited wine and snacks for the evening or $15 (+ HST) will also get you the new calendar. For more details, check out their FaceBook Event Page.

For those looking to support SlutWalk Vancouver and Tantra Fitness, calendars will be available for those unable to make it to the event directly from Tantra Fitness.

The Naked Truth (www.nakedtruth.ca) will be hosting an event for the annual International Day to End Violence Against Sex Work Event. This is an important day to commemorate sex workers who have suffered from violence, and to promote the equal human rights for sex workers who are often stigmatized, misunderstood, misrepresented, and treated unfairly by society at large.

The event will be held on December 17th, 2012 from 8:00pm to 10:00pm at The Prophouse Cafe. The Naked Truth will be welcoming speakers, performers (ie. drag shows), poetry readers, burlesque dancers, singers, spoken word, drummers… anyone wanting to contribute in an artistic medium please contact them via email (mzscream@nakedtruth.ca.)

Amanda Todd’s story breaks my heart. A young life lost- because she was female. Now, of course so many young boys are bullied. They have their fair share of pressures, and gay youth are often targeted. That cannot be ignored. However, there is one thing men are not bullied for: being sexual. If Amanda were male, that picture would likely have never been posted online; people don’t think men’s body parts are society’s to control. If Amanda were a man, no one would’ve harassed her this much about her sex life; people probably would’ve just high-five’d her. This type of bullying is exclusively reserved for females.

Our society believes that women’s bodies and sex lives are up for public critique. Girls are pressured to be sexual, yet when they are, they’re shamed. This is what Slutwalk tries so hard to fight. Slut-shaming and victim-blaming are very real experiences every woman faces. Amanda’s story is not uncommon. This is how our society treats women; that their purity is their worth. Is this how Canada in 2012 should be?

I feel guilt that Slutwalk’s message never reached Amanda. I wish she had known that she, and every other woman, doesn’t owe anyone purity, beauty, or an explanation. She was a beautiful person, and Slutwalk Vancouver wishes her family peace.
